Tama Star Drum Series – Part 1/2

Tama Star Series Mini - DrumsCult

The biggest problem Tama is facing today -as well as the other major brands- is double: on one hand, it is indeed very difficult to improve what is already unbeatable. In the last few years, the degree of excellence of any of the flagships of these makers is astounding. On the other side, even if you were able to take things further than the rest of your competitors, customers may not be able to perceive it. It really has to be apparent that you have made something better or new. With the new Tama Star Series, the Japanese brand has probably done the only thing they could do: to insist in what has distinguished them from the rest, the innovation in the hardware that sustains its excellent drums, which has a long history of value, quality and improvements since the times of Camco. Welcome to a whole new era in drum design…

This is how the Catalog for the new Tama StarClassic Series started back in 1994. Twenty years later, Tama still sells it as the top of the range Series. Thousands of them have been sold and some great drummers have felt in love with them -some still remain with the StarClassic since the nineties-. They’ve been one benchmark to beat and a reference in sound and ongoing innovation. But since 2013, the Tama Starclassic Series has to share the throne with the new Star Series. (more…)

Tama Starclassic Maple

Both rack and floor tom shells are made with 6 maple plies and a total of 5 mm. in thickness. We find also 8 layers of 7 mm. in the bassdrum. One of Tama’s secrets on how they get so much stiffness in shells that thin is the cross-lamination of the wood. In Tama’s StarClassic Maple catalog we can choose between several depht measures on every shell.

The sound is one of the best you’ll get from maple. Good volume, great definition and a correct sustain. The bass drum has a deep “punch” and sounds better with medium-low tuning.

Starclassic Maple drumkits usually come with no snare drum, but you can add it to your hardware pack. (more…)

Tama Star Drum Series – Part 2/2

Hoops, triangles and some rubber

Tama has a long history of innovation and quality regarding its hardware. The Tama Star Series is no exception, so here we find a second set of new characteristics and changes from what they’ve been building until now. Time and users will tell if these small changes are a major breakthrough or if there’s not much difference -again, we are talking of beating the unbeateable-. However, here we find a whole set of new patents that Tama has submitted which are still pending for approval. This gives us an idea of how the brand has put the most advanced and recent solutions designed by its engineers. Of course, we have die-cast zinc hoops, much more consistent and denser than triple-flanged hoops. As you may know, this helps with keeping the drum in tune longer, gives a crisper attack and a sound with more definition and projection. The edges of the hoops are flanged towards the inside, which helps snare drums to protect the sticks when hitting the hoop. Hold Tight washers are made of stainless steel and contain a rubber ring in the inner part that absorbs vibrations produced by the drummer’s strokes, so that tension rods are prevented from loosening and the drum is kept in tune. DW Eco-X Project

DW Eco-X Mini - DrumsCult

John Good is mad. And that’s a good thing. It is a good thing because he’s crazy enough to bet where others would stand in the second line to see how the ones that took the first step are doing. The DW Eco-X can be seen as a trick of marketing, with that all-green, all-sustainable fashion. And perhaps there’s indeed a marketing strategy in this project -therefore, in every other with a green label on it-, but the truth is that the eco-badge is not the only thing that makes these drums something special. Sonor Steve Smith 30th Anniversary Kit

Steve Smith - Sonor 30th Anniversary kit Mini - DrumsCult

When in 1977 Jean-Luc Ponty suggested his new drummer Steve Smith that he should buy a big drumset, the young drummer did some research on what brands and models did his idols use. It was in a Bernard Purdie clinic when he learned the excellent construction quality of Sonor drums, and he felt in love with them after hearing their fantastic sound. In fact, he became an entry-level endorser for the german brand and walked his way up through the years. He has remained faithful to Sonor forever. (more…)
