What is a Paradiddle?

Paradiddle: “sticking pattern that alternates between left and right hand”. Right. But, what’s its purpose? Why is it played like so? How do I use it?

 

 

 

It often happens the same way: in a class with your teacher, rehearsing with some friends, watching a video… One day you find out how to play a paradiddle, this famous exercise that every drummer should know to… uh… well, to do lots of things that nobody seems to be able to explain. And oh dear, it doesn’t look very complicated: R L R R – L R L L. You start playing it. First, with no accents. Then, accenting the first stroke. And then accenting the first stroke of each half, one accent with the right hand, one with the left. It’s a very important exercise, sure that soon something familiar will come out or you’ll find something you didn’t see at first sight. After a few minutes your hands begin to get comfortable with the sequence, you start to play those accents well, you build up some speed and… nothing happens. (more…)
